Able ARTS Work presents our first ever virtual arts showcase hosted by

ARTifact Forum & Gallery.

ARTifact Community Arts Showcase

History and About Squares.png
History

The ARTifact Community Arts Showcase is an annual tradition of Able ARTS Work. Beginning in 2014, with the first ever showcase held at ARTifact Forum & Gallery in Hawthorne, Able ARTS Work has built a unique art community that celebrates creatives not only across the South Bay but all of Southern California. This annual juried exhibition has grown and evolved through the years to create a fully accessible and inclusive showcase encompassing all arts disciplines. As we look back on the success of the past 6 years of the ARTifact Community Arts Showcase, we look to the future with excitement as the showcase transforms from our traditional format to an exciting virtual reinterpretation of this beloved community event.

History and About Squares.png
About

The Process: [Exposed] is the culmination of this transformative journey into new virtual world. This visual art exhibition explores the use of digital processes and the incorporation of photographic elements. Original artwork, film, and audio explore the idea of the artistic process vs. product with the intention to expose each distinct artistic process to viewers. ARTIfact Forum & Gallery unites artists of all abilities with the sole purpose of showcasing the unique talents of the local community while promoting the empowerment of all people through creative engagement. As past ARTifact Community Arts Showcases have established a budding art scene in Hawthorne, inclusive of all abilities, we build upon that foundation to bring these revolutionary ideas to a broader virtual audience. We aim to unify, in a time of separation and uncertainty, with an original creative narrative on the power of community, the need for connection, and the necessity of collaboration among our greater society. This exhibition redefines what it means to put on a community event in the post COVID-19 world. Able ARTS Work acknowledges and celebrates the process of artmaking and growing creatively as an arts community in these unforeseen times.

Clean Air Come Out

Julianna Gallardo

Medium: Collage Photography

Date: 2020

Price: Prints $20, $25, $28, Original $115

Description: Self portrait of artist Julianna expressing how she feels when wearing mask. This is a self-portrait of artist Julianna. Julianna created the image by taking her own photo and collaging images using Photoshop with assistance from staff. The image depicts Julianna in front of her fruit tree surrounded by leafs and flowers from her many other favorite fruit trees.

The portrait featured in black and white, represents how the artist felt when wearing a mask and feeling restricted from breathing fresh air. “Clean air” in order to be “healthy and fine” stated the artist as she continued to explain her experience and challenges when using a mask. The bright colors from nature that used to surround her seemed to be “fading” but the stoic glare the artist portrays represents how “strong” Julianna is. She overcame the “fear” of wearing a mask but still desires “clean air again” with “nature."

CECA Collaboration

CECA Collaboration with Daniela Lucidi

Medium: Mixed Media Collage

Dimensions: Original 20" x 18"

Date: 2020

Price: Prints $20, $25, $28 Original $90

Description: This is a collaboration piece created by CECA’s Mixed Media Collage class via Zoom during the COVID19 quarantine. This mixed-media collage on canvas is collaboration piece created by CECA’s Mixed-Media Collage students via Zoom during Track 2’s virtual class. This piece signifies the meaning of community, specifically to CECA students during the COVID-19 program closure of 2020. Before physically working on the collage, students and instructors brainstormed as to what community represents as a whole, and which aspects or elements makes up their respective communities. Since CECA is located in Hawthorne, Los Angeles County, everyone decided to make Los Angeles as their primary community. After various Zoom discussions, students decided they wanted to portray these communal aspects in the collage: art, music, nature, food, cities, neighborhoods, and family... specifically our family here at Able Arts Work. For each communal aspect, the instructor found potential images from magazines and asked students during virtual class which images should be used, and where they should be collaged. Aside from using magazine images, students wanted to also incorporate watercolor drawings into the collage, such as the Able Arts Work logo; the instructor only worked on the collage from home during classes. As Mixed-Media Collage classes progressed, "Our Big Community” collage grew, and blossomed into what it is today.

Put It Away

Satchel Hayes

Medium: Black and White Photograph

Date: 2020

Price: Prints $20, $25, $28

Description: This black and white photograph was taken and edited by CECA artist Satchel in his Photo Studio class in the spring, just before COVID-19 program closure. This photograph is a part of a class series inspired by the work of Edward Weston, a prominent photographer known for his macro (e.g. up-close) black and white photography. At CECA, Satchel almost always preferred to draw with Sharpie markers, whether it be in class activities or during his breaks; everyone at CECA unintentionally designated this tin of Sharpies as Satchel’s. When Photo Studio students were choosing which subject to focus on in their Weston photo section, Satchel unsurprisingly picked the Sharpie tin as his muse. With little hand on hand assistance from his instructor, Satchel snapped this macro shot of his Sharpies, later editing the original color photo to the black-and-white version seen here. This title, “Put It Away,” is a phrase Satchel consistently uses and associates with his Sharpies. Satchel has always loved putting back class materials after class, these Sharpies representing one of the quintessential class materials he routinely puts away into CECA’s art closet.
